About The Artwork

The carved wood sculptures in the Timber series evolved from my earlier minimalist landscape paintings and are also inspired by light and nature. In these sculptures I strive to express the inner power, strength and expansive potential of the original trees, thwarted as they are by having been reduced to construction lumber. Working with my deceased father’s tools, I carve deep into the planed lumber following the linear grain of the wood in search of the branches enclosed inside the beams to free the tree within. The wood is stained and sealed. The knots where the sap used to run mark where the branches were amputated and are sealed in luminous 23 K gold leaf.

I paint luminous abstract landscapes on gold leafed and metal leafed canvasses. Extending the centuries-old tradition of gold leafing, I adapted the technique to express my own Modernist vision - one that has luminosity as its underlying theme. My interest in painting on gold, copper, and aluminum leaf does not lie in the value of the precious metals, but in the unique quality of the reflected light that emanates from them. The metal leaf in fact forms only a micro-thin layer on the canvas. I paint directly onto this surface with acrylic paints and strive to create an intensely evocative radiance. In addition to paintings to canvas, I have created and exhibited bronze sculptures, installations, prints and works on paper. My studio practice is characterized by experimentation with artistic techniques and materials, many of which I have used in different combinations to develop several extended investigational series of work. I continue to live and work in New York City.
