About The Artwork

Time Not… is presented as a vision of both past and future: The shapes and forms allude to machinery or structure of some sort that performs an advanced and complex function that one may not understand or indeed beyond the realms of current technology. In that same instance though, there is a yearning of the dreams of yesteryear…when the first satellites were launched into space and society’s view of the future was one of utopian ideals where technology and humanity would compliment and complete each other. Another aspect you may want to consider what subjective and personal connotations it has for you. When you were a child, did you also dream of a highly advanced future where robots would make your bed and do your chores? Did you build spaceships and time machines out of the old cardboard boxes in the garage? It is important to go forwards into the future, but one should not forget the futures of the past. That is how we reflect, change and grow. Imagination can really fuel what ideals and goals you wish to pursue in life, no? The sculpture/object/machine itself is made up of a mixture of everyday materials such as cardboard, metal rods, wire and even a clock. Because the future has to be built on what you have in the present right? The spraying of everything metallic silver was an aesthetic choice: Building up the suspension of belief that this structure holds significance and strength while still retaining that slightly fragile and wobbly look of the cardboard. Cardboard has a lot of nice connotations as well. As you associate the material itself with packaging and storing, your mind may wonder as to what exactly this structure is storing inside…

I am an artist currently studying for my Masters of fine art at Birmingham City University. My practice as an artist is primarily an investigation into grids, logic and mathematical systems, and by subverting them, how people will react and respond to them...myself included. I achieve this through the mediums of sculpture, video, installation, drawing and writing.
