About The Artwork

Tongues have fascinated me since years, and have often appeared in many of my paintings, drawings and collages. I find them the sexiest part of the body. One day I picked up the clay, and the first Tongue sculpture spontaneously appeared. Then another one. And another. Tongues has since become an important series of clay sculptures. Tongues stand vertically, like totems, proudly erected, displaying their own personality and attitude. A corporeal, red, shiny and fleshy presence, Tongues is a series ongoing since 2022. They exist in different sizes, from very tiny ones and up to 14 inches in height. Tongue is an organ, a muscle, our language center, our door to taste, pleasure, and communication with others, verbally and physically. Tongues possess strength and delicacy, deliciousness and hedonism, as well as being repulsive when not belonging to someone we like. Tongues can caress but they can also hurt. They modify faces and are signs for attitudes. Even though they are usually hidden, they are always present and in motion. Each ceramic Tongue is unique. Each being detailed and fine in its finishing. They are made using glazed ceramic, and often have applications of additional materials, like gold leaf. Tongues are envisioned as a group of standing forces and have been exhibited as a group, even though each one is strong on her own. Tongues are still but not passive. They are meant to be a presence, a tiny speaking partner. A friend, foe, or else.

My work explores togetherness, intimacy and belonging, aspects of time, and the convergence of internal and external realities. I use different media interchangeably, like performance, drawings, sculptures, and installations. Working with- and from the body, my ritualistic performances and installations act as scaffolds where humans, objects, lines, and colors are invited to construct and experience moments of togetherness. I work mainly with series and ritualistic works, often years long, and which are embedded in my daily personal routines. I often work with series and ritualistic works, often years long, and which are embedded in my daily personal routines. For the collection offered here I chose a special selection of one of my longest ritualistic series named "Periscope". In this series, each day a drawing is produced using the same size and technique: archival-ink pen and watercolor on paper. Each day an imaginary, abstract periscope peeps to capture that which happens both inside and outside of my body. A journal of moments, each drawing depicts the embodied narrative I capture at that moment in time: the inner, the outer, thoughts, memories, the world’s news, or the imaginary. Each drawing is understood as an open window to be entered, and interpreted by the viewer. Curator Beatrice Fontana writes about this series: "The collection is filled with fascinating little details, anthropomorphic forms and fantastical figures, ethereal yet with a tenacious physicality. Dreamlike dimensions that confront text-thoughts and multiply voices, generating a bold chorality. A miniature snapshot of a colorful and pensive collective, portrayed with its human cargo of thoughts and dreams." The series "Periscope" has been exhibited several times and it is part of numerous private collections. I grew up in Madrid, Spain and was trained as an architect. After graduating I work as an independent designer in New York City, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Shanghai, and London, before moving to Zurich in 2013. As an independent designer I work across cultures, teams, disciplines and media, including graphic design, scenography, interiors and installations. In 2015 I receive an Adapt-r Marie Curie European grant for a residency period in Brussels, during which I develop my first performances. Even though my work was highly creative and experimental during my long period as a designer, it is at this moment when my practice is definitely positioned in the arts.
