This listing is for Ceramic Raku Japanese Tōrō #2. It is painted in a wonderfully expressive Wild style manner, with Gold and blues and just simply delectable. It is large enough to fit a tea candle. Very unique. This comes in three separate pieces. This is my take on a Edo Era tōrō, a Japanese garden Lantern. I love the Asymmetry of it, the Blance long on one side, with the Counter Balance on the Cover. It is simple, elegant, minimal. It will bring a taste of a Japanese garden into your home! Please note, it is Decorative, and a bit small to place a candle in. The tōrō is an emblematic symbol of Japan, it is found in myriad shapes and forms throughout the country. This one is based on a style called a nozura-dōrō, which is a Rustic style lantern popular in the Edo Era of Japan. This lantern comes in two parts, and is suitable for use as a Candle Holder. If fits a tea light very nicely. Lighting a tōrō is considered an offering to the Buddha. They are a popular element in Shinto style Japanese gardens. This is an example of a Dai Toro, or Platform Lantern. They are often seen lining the pathway to a Shinto shrine. The bottom piece, touching the ground, represents the Chi, or Earth, the middle part represents water. The next section is that which houses the fire, the top sections represent Air and Spirit.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in Sitges, Spain, near to Barcelona. I create paintings, ceramic sculptures and fiber art. I started my art career as a street artist as a teenager. I loved the dynamism of graffiti, the rebellion and expression. I filled my portfolio with pictures of my murals, and got myself into Art School, Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver. Art school introduced me to many new ideas. Although I majored in Sculpure, I found myself leaning towards Paintings, and finally I started experimenting with Installation and Public Intervention. I travelled to India and Thailand. This changed things. I wanted to make political art, or do projects which helped people. Later I moved to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where I was introduced to Conceptual Art. I have exhibited in Tokyo, Japan, Toronto and Barcelona. The last few years I have focused on Fiber- Art installations and Raku Ceramic Sculpture. Now after several years hiatus, I am back to making Paintings. I found making abstract paintings very liberating. I love it!
