I am lucky to have spent many days from my childhood to the present on Southern California beaches. They inspired me to create colorful, expressionistic figures from the iconographic images of beach-going women and men, from surfers to sunbathers.
I chose as the form for these works, the totem poles, which originated from the Native peoples for the Pacific Northwest. Their meanings mirror those of the Totem Bathers: presenting a range of complex and symbolic mythologies.
They are built of solid poplar wood, carved and painted with dazzling colors of acrylic. This sculpture is ready to hang.
