James Joyce left Dublin at the age of 29 and then spent the rest of his career writing about it.When asked why he never went back he said that Dublin was etched on his heart . So I felt it appropriate to etch the street map of Dublin onto his death mask which I have altered slighty to give it a slight smile ! so he is sleeping not dead . I worked with a lazer etched in wood map of the city and then placed a wax of the face into it and then etched the streets onto the mask . It was a slow process, 2 hours a day , which I did during lockdown. The piece was then cast and patinated quite darkley and the face area was rubbed and polished so as to give the emerging feeling to the face . It is in cast bronze with a stainless steel frame as its quite heavy , 25 Kilogram/ 4 stone , It is an edition of 9.

Born in 1956, John Coll has had an interest in art and the natural world since he was a boy. He studied marine biology at NUI Galway and worked as a biologist on a fish farm. At the age of 27 he became a professional sculptor. Much of his work is inspired by the marine environment and the human interaction with it. An accomplished portraitist, he has sculpted many busts of Irish writers and more recently the President of Ireland , Michael D Higgins . In 2018 he completed a 2 meter sculpture of Dr Michael Smurfit for the Smurfit Business School and most recently a sculpture of the singer Luke Kelly that sits on South King Street in Dublin . His working medium is cast and welded bronze and stainless steel.
