Ships in a Crate
This 360 degree sculpture tells the story of Harriet Tubman and her participation in the Underground Railroad. Inspired by her bravery and fiery perseverance, Chiodo has depicted Tubman leading fugitives to free country, slipping and sliding in the dark of night in the winter. She carries an infant she drugged so it would sleep and not reveal their location to bounty hunters. Next to her is an abolitionist named Thomas Garrett who gave the weary travelers a safe haven on their journey. One of Chiodo's Remember Them Narratives, this is the model of a larger monument in Wilmington, DE.
