About The Artwork

making different word sounds. The meaning of ubiquitous phrases shifts or is obscured as the arrangements are altered. Profanity cuts to the heart of expression, tainting language in often-contradictory ways. With the proliferation of cell phones, the subtleties of emotion are expressed with emoticons rather than poetry. What is really meant is often lost to the inconvenience of speaking face to face. The placement on a shelf suggests the possibility of rearrangement.

This is part of an ongoing series, eventually including many more elements. Each is cast in an edition of 5.This is 4/5.

I am a New York Artist who does sculpture, works on paper and photographic work. My work focuses on specific forms that have strong symbolic meaning, either to me personally or to the culture at large. Through manipulation of context my work examines underlying contradictions that I find in these symbols, either via my personal experience or observations of the world around me. Often, the symbols from one distinct series merge with another in the way that the events of one's life seamlessly connect to one another. The landscape and rural culture of Upstate New York informs my work with a seductive melancholia. Underlying all of the work is an autobiographical search for personal meaning. Most recently I have been creating ephemeral interventions in the landscape and using photography to document the process. I use a broad range of processes and materials such as steel, wood, photography, cement, mold making and bronze. I let the ideas dictate the medium and maintain a broad working vocabulary so that the expression of my ideas is not limited by a narrow approach.
