"Waiting" is a snapshot of people in one of the local markets here in Morocco. The rough texture of the figures is in direct comparison to the smooth pale Tassa stone base (native to Morocco) signifying the hardship of life for many. I made the figures without arms, hoping to convey the sense of hopelessness and frustration that many feel in this day and age.
Welded metal on a Tassa Stone base with green baize under. Acid washed and varnished.

Born in North Wales, we moved abroad to live as a family, in Nigeria at an early age. It was here that I learnt to appreciate African art and culture, especially after visiting The Sacred Grove of Osun in Oshogbo. Susanne Wenger, the founder of the "New Sacred Art" movement, who lived there until her death in 2009, had a huge impact on me as did Giacometti. Now living in Morocco, I feel my art combines the simplicity and sinewy figures of Giacometti with the natural and organic forms often found in African masks and sculpture.
