About The Artwork

Pouwhenua type carving Having moved to New Zealand with my mother, I have discovered and been strongly attracted by the richness and depth of the Māori culture and particularly by Whaikaro, the art of Māori carving. Māori mythology has an intense connection with nature as well as the relationship and reverence to ancestors. Symbols in Māori carving convey meaning on the relationship of man to nature and ancestry. I love working with wood and to try to combine my interpretation of the Māori language of carving with my own understanding of the relation to the world of those who order carvings from me. Pouwhenua is a carved wooden post used by Māoris to mark territorial boundaries. They reflect the relationship between the environment , the ancestors and their standing.this Pouwhena is carved from Totara Wood, one of the finest wood in New Zealand.

I am a young artist born in 1998 in Cambodia. Orphan at birth, I was adopted and raised in Paris, France. In 2013 I followed my mother to her native New Zealand and since then I have been living and working in Auckland.. There, I discovered the culture of my mother’s ancestors whose great, great grandmoter, Erena Pareraukawa (1825-1900) was a Maori princess. Her ancestors had come to Aotearoa in the Tainui canoe. She married a Frenchman, Louis Dihars, around 1845. I discovered the richness and beauty of the Maori culture and chose to learn wood carving to combine my love for the wood with my passion for the culture of the Maori people, their understanding of nature, the value they give to family and ancestors.
