The work was inspired by the deep mysteries of the ocean and its ever-changing nature. The idea of the sea as a living, whispering entity sparked a fascination with the unknown depths and the vast, uncharted possibilities it holds. It represents the timeless allure of the ocean and the stories it carries through time. I hope viewers will feel a sense of awe and wonder, contemplating the infinite possibilities the ocean embodies. I want them to reflect on the beauty and mystery of nature, and how, much like the ocean, life is full of unexpected shifts and uncharted paths. It should evoke a sense of curiosity about the unknown and inspire a deeper connection to the natural world. I chose this subject matter because the ocean, with its constant ebb and flow, mirrors the fluidity of time and change. The medium and style were selected to evoke a sense of fluid motion and depth, capturing the subtle nuances of light and shadow that play across the water's surface, symbolizing the hidden mysteries beneath. The style helps convey both the serene and turbulent aspects of the sea, reflecting life's own duality.

I’m Sookkyung Park, originally from South Korea and now based in Maryland, U.S. My artistic journey began in 1982 when I founded an Arts & Crafts studio, which I successfully ran for 25 years. In my 50s, I moved to the U.S. and pursued a B.A. in Studio Arts at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I graduated in 2016. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of participating in various regional and international juried exhibitions and have been featured in notable publications such as The Washington Post, The Korea Times, East City Art, and Bmore Art. My expertise lies in paper-based artwork, a medium I've mastered throughout my career. I furthered my education by completing an MFA at Towson University in 2023. My work has been recognized with multiple awards, including two Best Awards in the 3-D category from CAGO (Contemporary Art Gallery Online) in 2020 and 2021, and First Prize in the 2023 “Paper Made” international competition by Fiber Art Now.
