Meeya Seo

My work is not a reproduction of tradition nor a modernization of folk painting. Through long-accumulated symbols such as Sipjangsaeng and the Twelve Zodiac signs, I approach the structures through which humans have come to perceive the world.

Rather than conveying fixed meanings, these repeated forms function as conditions of perception that are reactivated within contemporary sensibility. Using these symbols as painterly devices, I explore states prior to distinction and the layered structures of time.

My practice does not narrate personal experience. Instead, it is a formal investigation that temporarily suspends habitual modes of understanding and lingers at a point before cognition. Through this process, I construct visual relationships between nature and humanity, the present and accumulated time.
