Mark Rowden is an English-born Australian artist, printmaker, and illustrator whose powerful figurative work blends technical mastery with emotional storytelling. Born in Margate, UK in 1979, Rowden moved to Australia in 1996 and studied at the National Art School, Sydney, where he honed his printmaking skills. With a career spanning over two decades, his work is recognised for its cinematic intensity—where dramatic shadows, bold linework, and chiaroscuro effects lend a sense of stillness, intimacy, and psychological depth.
Rowden's signature linocuts and hand-coloured prints explore themes of femininity, identity, and connection. His subjects are often caught in quiet contemplation or suspended movement—figures illuminated by delicate highlights amidst darkness. A master of tone and contrast, Rowden guides the viewer’s gaze with precision, allowing each print to slowly reveal its narrative through the layering of light, shadow, and subtle gesture.
In addition to his own practice, Rowden has extensive experience in fine art printing and has collaborated with some of Australia’s most esteemed artists. He continues to exhibit nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies.
Bachelor of Fine Arts, National Art School, Sydney, Australia (Graduated 2000)
Additional studies in printmaking and illustration (UK & Australia)
