Azad Karim was born in 1954 in Erbil, in the province of Kurdistan in northern Iraq. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad. He successfully completed it and received the institute award as one of the best students. He then decided to study abroad and in 1976 arrived to Slovenia, where he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. In 1980 he graduated in painting. In 1983, he completed his master's degree in graphics at the Ljubljana Academy.
