Egyptian/American artist Basil El Halwagy creates wearable-art characters called Fine Art Superheroes. El Halwagy’s characters are tightly wrapped in arabesque patterns and motifs. Each unique motif bestows a special visual and thematic identity upon the wearer. El Halwagy produces performances and photographic works in collaboration with contemporary dancers. In 2016 El Halwagy was featured in America to Zanzibar: Muslims Near and Far, at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.
He has brought performance art to the Mills Gallery at the Boston Center for the Arts, Mobius Art Space, and FigmentBoston. In 2013 he received a grant from The Boston Foundation, to organize a ‘Fine Art Superhero’ Flash Mob. El Halwagy is Vermont Studio Center full-fellowship recipient.
