Graffiare Tiles
By Bernard Re, Jr.
Sgraffito and sgraffiti come from the Italian word graffiare ("to scratch"), ultimately from the Greek γράφειν (gráphein) "to write".
How: The “graffiare” technique I used is to apply black majolica glaze in various viscosities to an already glazed and fired tile and then to scratch it away to create the “view”. The tile is then re-fired to fuse the over-glaze graffiare design to the existing tile surface.
