Brian Mccabe

My studio is in Dartmoor, England. I studied Graphic Design and worked as a creative director in advertising but I've always felt compelled to paint, initially still life and portraiture, but for many years solely abstract.

I find abstract expressionism to be the most emotionally engaging and inspiring period in modern art, particularly gestural/action painting.

I usually have several paintings in progress at any one time. I build up layers of texture then abrade them to deconstruct and bring concealed areas back to life. Anything familiar is removed or reworked, continually refining the composition.

I work without a plan or preconceived idea, allowing instinct to be my guide, exploring the unknown and solving artistic problems.
