Cheryl Papasian is attending Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and will graduate in September 2013. She is creating sculptures using bronze, plaster, plastic, ceramics and found materials.
Cheryl is concerned with surfaces in sculpture and inconsistencies in the value of materials. For instance in Diamond, a large bronze gem-shaped sculpture. even though made of bronze, it does not exemplify luxury or usefulness. Her installations combine synthetic and traditional materials to question the place held in society for material objects of value or uselessness.
These ideas of artificiality and luxury and the closing gap between high culture and low culture are referenced throughout Cheryl's practice. While on residency in Japan Cheryl studied small finely crafted ceramic objects and has since become focused on carefully finishing the surfaces of her bronze and ceramic sculptures and adding digital photographic images to her sculptural objects.
