In high school I was experimenting with color printing in my parent’s basement. Since then, from film to digital, my camera has been an extension of myself. Professionally I've photographed heads of state, captains of industry, and national sports teams...Little league champs and class reunions. But when that work is done I always find myself back in nature, attempting to capture the feel of the moss and scent of the approaching storm. As a life-long sailor I find that water is never far from sight. I feel that powerful images evoke a visceral response. If you find yourself ‘there’, or wishing you were, then I’ve been successful.
Ansel Adams said that the negative was the score, but the print was the performance. I could not agree more. All these years later, after processing and printing my own work as a young man, and then providing color lab services for so many professionals as the owner of a lab, I still evaluate a photo by its print.
My process is not to attempt to make a photograph, but simply to see. The photograph makes itself.
