Clemence Gastan

I am a bastard, a crossbreed of Ukrainian Ashkenazim and Greek antiquaries.
I grew up in a family of baroque music lovers and fans of science
fiction. The beholder of my work might discover the lively and vehement Mediterranean as
well as the tragic and fatalistic “saudade” of Eastern Europe. The plastic and the pictorial! A
sudden leap, a syncopation leaving (behind) silence, the instrument of tranquility, and respite
before the grand flood.
Against the background of a mighty and violent vital thrust, throughput, pulsations and
combustions are triggering my artistic expression. Stimuli always embedded in music and
rhythm. I apply the slow and the fast as well as ear-splitting noise, easing the tension in an
almost dissident or rather spontaneous manner. It is the sincerity of the
sensation that weaves my logorrhea by way of the eye.
