Return:
I spent my early life in the Midwest both in urban and rural areas. My painting study began in 1992 at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, part of Indiana University. The traditions of landscape painting inform my current practice as do the urban and rural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, where I now live. The work reflects a "return" both to the landscapes I come back to as well as the roots held so deeply for me in the urban and rural landscapes of my past and present experience. The landscapes are based on real life experiences, often sketched on-site and completed from memory in the studio. I find working from memory creates a layer of experience to the painting based on feeling and emotion, not just image representation. The paintings document the history of surface work required to "return" to the landscape scene.
