I have been making mixed media mosaics for several years in the UK, using traditional glass tiles, combined with beads, glass, stones, wood, metal, and semi-precious stones. Each mosaic takes many hours to make – sometimes as long as 200 hours or more, but I find the process totally absorbing, and the hours fly by.
I'm inspired by the world around me, and also by the materials that I use – a certain coloured bead, perhaps, and the way the light reflects on it, or the way some stones, beads and other elements just seem to belong together. I spend several hours just planning a piece, deciding what elements to use and how to use them together.
I have a vast collection of beads and stones etc, and just looking through them will often inspire another piece.
No two mosaics will ever be the same, as the elements I use are often one of a kind pieces – sometimes antique or rare.
I'm always experimenting with different media to give texture to my mosaics, and most of my works have raised, highly textured surfaces. I never know what I'll be using next, but I know it will never be boring........
