Emi Bivens

I am interested in the language of images and its evolution throughout history. The human brain is constantly searching for images, as proven by the popularity of digital cameras, touchscreen cell phones, digital tablets, image driven websites and the internet. I am interested in how our relationship with images has changed throughout history and how the evolution of image making has culminated into an age of automated imagery. As a painter, I am interested in how painting fits into this conversation, and how the materiality and permanence of paint on canvas can both differ from and interact with new forms of visual communication.

My current work explores these concepts by combining different visual vernacular into single compositions. By forming digital pixilation of images with paint, I explore what makes up digital imagery and use loss of information and interference to hint at the fragility of such pictures.
