Amon Nyx sews monochromatic artworks, composed of calligraphic marks on fabric, quilted together into an intuitive whole.

As a meditative morning ritual, emotive marks are inscribed on raw canvas and salvaged fabrics. These random swathes of expression are gathered, shuffled together, and played with until serendipity allows the Gestalt to emerge.

Faces often appear out of nowhere, a symbol of the desire for connection and meaning. The human eye sees what the heart desires. At times, ink is added to explore the faces further, other times the work is left to the mind's eye to complete.

We are like these artworks: a conglomerate of daily marks, thoughts, and actions that gradually build up to a life expressed externally. We are formed from a patchwork of influences and connections, and sewn tightly into the context of our community and heritage. This can be comforting or terrifying.
Yet fortunately, each day we get to start anew and choose again how to make the tiny new marks that form our future building blocks.

Amon Nyx embraces the simple joy of taking the singular insignificant fragments and gathering them together in a collaborative whole. Like tiny cells building a bigger body, they are expanded and sewn together, crea...

Amon Nyx is a Sydney-based collaboration between two brothers and an artist mother. Apprenticed in their mothers studio from an early age, Amon Nyx is the vehicle in which their apprenticeship is taking place and through which their mother is passing on her knowledge. It remains a pseudonym in order to leave space for each son to later embark on his own individual artistic journey. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, artists were typically trained through apprenticeships with established artists.
Embracing art as a meditative task and an antidote to our culture of distraction, the brothers carve a space for a daily ritual which allows them to peacefully shut down and slip into flow. Brush in hand, the tactile texture of fabric grounds their senses.
It is the thrill of creating order from chaos, seeking the eternal behind the veil of the mundane, and the happy purr of an industrial sewing machine that inspires them to make art.
