Since the mid 90’s I have worked as a self-employed photographic printer, providing specialist hand-printing services for a broad range of London centric clients, including commercial photo labs, studios, museums, tv & film companies and picture archives.
I love being in the darkroom, and have always been fascinated with the magical way an image is created. Countless happy hours have been spent, over many years, experimenting with camera-less techniques, exploring the possibilities of capturing light and reflection patterns: a subject I find incredibly alluring.
I have been collecting shadows in the darkroom for more than 20 years in an attempt to depict the moments in life that are usually fleeting. The images, to me, represent a point frozen in time, literally a moment of illumination.
This is at the core of my work, the idea that a flash of insight, or awareness, can be captured in a kind of visual echo. I’m trying to create a tether to a moment in time, a direct connection to a feeling or memory, to preserve it, re-live and examine it, and prevent it from slipping away.
