Akram Al Halabi is a contemporary artist, known for his compelling work that bridges diverse cultural influences, shaped by his background in both the Middle East and Europe. Born in Majdal-Shams, a village in the Golan Heights, in 1981, Al Halabi's artistic journey began at a young age. He studied drawing and painting at Bait Al Fan in the late 1990s. By 2000, he had already begun formal studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, Syria, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2005. Al Halabi's education further expanded internationally. In 2007, through the One World Scholarship from the Afro-Asian Institute, he moved to Vienna to attend the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated with distinction in 2012 under the guidance of Professor Erwin Bohatsch. His academic path also included an exchange year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Umeå, Sweden. From 2015 to 2017, Al Halabi participated in the MA program in Digital Art Composition at the Film Academy Vienna, which is in line with his interdisciplinary approach to contemporary art. His artistic practice spans several mediums, with a particular focus on contemporary issues around Identity, myth and diaspora. Al-Halabi's exhibitions have taken him to many places in Europe and abroad, including the "New Future" exhibition at the Museum di Palazzo in Bologna, Italy (2013), the "IMAGETEXTE3" show at the Topographie de l'Art gallery in Paris (2014), and "Creating Common Good" at the Kunst Haus Wien in 2015. He also participated in "Diaspora Now" at the Museum of Fine Arts Gifu in Japan (2017). Al Halabi has received recognition for his work, winning the "Kunstler am Werk" award at the Lenzinger Wettbewerb, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, in 2011. His work has been collected by institutions such as the British Museum’s Department of the Middle East and the Kupferstichkabinett in Vienna, as well as by private collectors in Europe and the Middle East. Currently based in Vienna and Israel, Al Halabi continues to explore the intersection of traditional artistic techniques with modern digital approaches, reflecting his unique cultural background and diverse experiences.
