Gwen Bigham

Melissa Post, while curator at the Mint Museum, wrote of Bigham's work, "[Her] artistic repertoire is as eclectic as it is vast... She juxtaposes utilitarian materials in unlikely ways to create uncommonly beautiful sculpture... Bigham's diverse oeuvre reflects her dynamism and her innate ability to create moments of wonder."

Gwen Bigham attended Appalachian State University and graduated from Winthrop University with honors in 2002. During this time, she was honored with an award from the International Sculpture Center. After completing her BFA, Bigham was twice an affiliate artist at the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC.

During her studies, her talent was recognized by the International Sculpture Center, celebrating her innovative approach to contemporary sculpture and her ability to inspire introspection and dialogue. This milestone was further enhanced by two residencies at the McColl Center for Visual Art. In 2003, following these achievements, Gwen was invited to teach at Winthrop University, a role she held until her move to Asheville. 

A recipient of the Arts & Science Council Regional Artist Grant, Charlotte / Mecklenburg Inc., NC, Bigham expanded her artistic reach and impact. At the International Sculpture Center in NJ, her pieces were praised for their thought-provoking nature. The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Winston-Salem, NC (Formerly SECCA), both showcased Gwen's ability to blend beauty and unconventional materials. Her works, shown at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design and the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, highlighted her unique sculptural approaches. Born in South Carolina, Gwen currently lives and works in Asheville, NC.
