My work seeks to communicate through the use of a collectively shared haptic vocabulary. The visual and tactile phenomena of color, pattern, and texture possess the ability to cross sociological boundaries—which is in direct contrast to the many limitations of verbal communication.
By using soft materials and textile techniques, I tap into universal memories via our common experience of touch. Meaning is expressed through the careful consideration of materials and the inventive processes used to manipulate them.
Where verbal language fails, touch has a commonality that is sincere. My goal is to have the viewer feel as if they are engaging in an empathetic conversation—without a single word being spoken.
