I read once that the souls of drowned sailors become seabirds, circling the ocean. Very many sailors have drowned when shipwrecked on King Island, in Bass Strait, between Tasmania and mainland Australia. The island doesn't look like this, but the bird-spirits might.

I live in Tasmania, which is about as far away as you can get from everywhere else, and spend as much time as possible in the wilderness - primeval forests are good for the soul. Landscape here is old and weathered and rugged with plenty of rocky mountains and mysterious valleys. Both the scenery and history get described as gothic quite regularly, so that's what I paint. Tasmanian Gothic.
