David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited 133 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 280 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
Equally right and left brained, David was offered a scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, however he instead enrolled at MIT, studying Mechanical Engineering and was voted by the faculty as the top engineer in his class. He began Harvard Medical School while still an undergraduate and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham & Women's Hospital. He is triple board-certified in Anesthesiology, ICU medicine, and Pain Management. He studied photography under Peter Simon, and is self-taught as a found object artist.
David exhibits in numerous galleries, including The Old Sculpin Gallery, Galaxy Gallery, and Featherstone Center for the Arts. He is on the Board of Directors of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association and The Old Sculpin Gallery; over 35 exhibitions each summer with numerous featured artist shows, He strongly believes in giving back to the community; works he has donated for auctions or raffles have raised over $15000 for charitable organizations in the past three seasons, primarily for art and music education, animal welfare and community services.
