This piece was inspired by a photograph of a wave-dissipating concrete tetrapod that landed in a tunnel, swept away by a severe storm. The ongoing focus of my artistic practice has been the depiction of urban landscapes with very faint traces of life. Seoul, where most of my works are based, serves as a dwelling of modern urban life forms, offering rich terrain for exploring themes of demolition, alienation, and resilience. Seeking to transfer my observation into a painting, I start by covering a canvas with a background color using oil. In my works, red and pink backgrounds create an unsettling energy, while black evokes a somber mood. Objects are often painted in exaggerated saturations to disorient the viewer's eyes. Exteriors of buildings and construction remnants serve as focal points, embodying the hidden struggles of urban dwellers. I aim to find trails of shattered lives in the sprawl of a city and translate them into a painting. My work mainly focuses on painting construction sites, buildings, and their byproducts in contradictory hues and subtle details. In my canvas, I intend to depict the frail surface of a scene with fragments of life, inviting viewers to contemplate the complex relationship between urban environments and the human experience.
