Derick Gnonlonfoun

Derick Gnonlonfoun is a Beninese and French contemporary visual artist whose works explore identity, belonging, and the beautiful struggle of straddling multiple worlds. He draws inspiration from his experiences as an expat, incorporating elements from the various countries he has called home.

The notion of double consciousness, coined by W.E.B. Du Bois, resonates deeply with his works. It refers to the experience of perceiving oneself through the lens of both a dominant culture and a marginalized one, leading to a sense of divided identity. This concept is central to his artistic exploration, as he strives to capture the complexity and beauty that arises from this duality.
