I find inspiration in nature. From the places I have traveled, to the Pacific Northwest that I now call home.
Each part of the world has a very specific quality of light - the way that it interacts with the environment. I try to capture this quality in my paintings. The trees, the water, and the plants – how do they interact to produce color, shadow and shape? Also important is time. What time of the day is it? Is it the crisp sunrise, the deep sunset, the bright yellow of midday? What time of year is it? Is it the dewy spring? Is it the somber but vibrant autumn? All of these play a role in the specific quality of light that ends up getting expressed onto the canvas.
The focus of my work is to bring one’s attention to the depth of a singular subject. By making that subject large and all encompassing, that singularity overtakes you and it becomes everything. You become lost in a flower, in an ocean wave, in leaves on a tree. One is forced to examine what is usually small, or part of a whole, as something that is a world unto itself. It is my hope that by doing this the viewer is forced to appreciate the beauty that is all around us and be humbled by nature.
