Matthew Klein’s practice has encompased several areas of commercial and editorial photography; and intense explorations in personal image-making.
During a decades-long and storied career in commercial photography, he has
produced and maintained a dedication to a search for personal expression while drawing on the discipline that the intense rigor of commercial work demands.
Klein’s photographs have appeared on many magazine covers, including Time, Psychology Today and New York.
As a commercial and editorial photographer he has received numerous awards, including the Prix Savignac, the French government’s award for best poster of the year, 1996 (with Milton Glaser), and a Gold Award from Graphis
His exhibitions include Graphics in the City, Triennale di Milano, Milan, Italy, 1988 (3612 photographs describing the depth and scope of urban graphic
expression, with Milton Glaser);
Work/Life/Tools, a traveling exhibition accompanied by a book, sponsored by the Steelcase Design Partnership;
and a one-man show of paintings at Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle 2005
Recent commercial work includes packaging for LU Cookies, Kraft Foods, BirdsEye Foods, Gorton’s Seafood, Kind Snacks, Saffron Road Foods,
and MedLine;...
Studied art and architecture at Cooper Union, visual communication at Parsons and graphic design at SVA.
Taught at Parsons, and Pratt (graduate and undergraduate).
Currently teaching at Shenandoah University.
