My recent artworks in the series “Northern Spring” are mixed media collages on paper. These show the influence of my relocation from Washington, D. C. to rural Maine. The collages include watercolor, colored pencil, gouache, graphite, and found materials often U.S. Geological Survey maps of Maine locations. Look closely and you will note that cutout images that are mounted to project from the surface.
Images come from a variety of sources - the word lists I begin with each new painting, objects that I collect, images I have scavenged from other artist’s work, drawings from my travels. I have traveled repeatedly to Japan as a Fulbright teacher and South Korea bringing home patterned fabric and papers that appear in my work. Surrealist artists including Joseph Cornell and Frida Kahlo and contemporary artists are a great influence on my practice.
Currently, I am in process on a series with the working title, “Northern Birds.”
I studied in a number of different universities, completing my Masters in Painting and Drawing at Virginia Commonwealth University.
