Flyleaf Gallery combines two of my lifelong passions: visual art and literature. It also allows me to support public libraries and public schools around the country. When I wasn’t running around outside as a kid growing up in Boston, I could be found reading in our local library. This led to me collecting old, neglected books that I consider beautiful or interesting (although not necessarily valuable)–a hobby that continues to this day. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media like pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. Eventually, I switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the healthcare sector. At this stage of my career, I am thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine art. My vibrant BiblioQuilt series was created using old, discarded books that were salvaged from basements and attics. They’re not made of cloth. I repurposed every part of those books —the covers, the pages, the spines—breathing new life into my materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics.
