Gergely Istvan

I live and work in Budapest, Hungary and create in different media.

Since 2015 I am working on experimental abstract paintings, that I compose by using the traces of loss of matter.
Common materials and the self made wax based paints produce a wide scale of interactions under the influence of heat. During the accurately directed process of heating the layers, colors, textures and plastic qualities are transforming. Playing with these changes enable me to attempt to visualize time and temporality in a contemporary approach. I find the alteration of visual qualities also significant, so I often make a documentation about the process.
In these cases I consider the documentation as an organic part of the work.
My paintings can be found in several private collections in Hungary and in the U.S.A.

Recently I was making photograph-based works, like lightboxes and photobooks.
By building objects using illuminants and photographs printed on foil
my aim was to experiment with potentials of defining or re-defining an atmosphere.
The photobook I edited in 2019 has won a "bronze winner" classification at the Budapest International Photo Awards in the same year.
