Jack Hughes

Jack Hughes is a British based artist (b. 1997, North Wales) currently based in London, working with the medium of oil paint to create an image that acts as a threshold to his own imagined painterly landscape. Since graduating from Arts University Bournemouth with a BA in Fine Art, Jack’s ideas have originated from an interest in 20th century literature and the idea of nostalgia, but also the idea of dreamscapes and the unfinished puzzle that’s attempting to be pieced together as you reflect on the experience of a dream.
Taking inspiration from artists such as Peter Doig, Francis Bacon and Henri Matisse, Jack's work is closely bound with the materiality of oil paint and are an exploration of colour and texture. Jack makes an attempt, through the use of recognisable elements of the figurative representation and painterly style, to create a landscape of the in-between, an uncomfortable tension between a figure and abstraction. Jack’s process is an ever-changing push and pull between the real and imagined.
Jack’s work has been sold to collections in Miami and Thessaloniki, as well as exhibiting in shows across the UK and overseas in Greece.
