James Burnes

I grew up in a super creative environment, in a converted Barn an a small suburban farm in New England. My mother a writer and my father was an environmentalist. Our home was host to many creative people coming and going, staying the weekends, or teams of friends building rally cars in the shop. My sister and I hatched chicks in the living room or raised orphaned lambs under the counter, while horses that roamed the yard would scratch their bellies on the crumpled remains of my mothers lilac bushes. My favorite place was to hang out in the shop. I always loved to help rebuild a tractor or fix a barn. I knew I would always work with my hands.
I make creations that are unique and life-like from afar. A closer inspection reveals an abstract layering of form space materials and patina. I use natural found objects that I am drawn to. Combining them with fabricated Cor-Ten steel to make cohesive and energetic work. The natural patina and materials help the works to stand out while simultaneously in accord with their surroundings.
In my process, as I travel around the country picking up and dropping off works, I stop and collect found, natural objects that I am attracted too like petrified wood, tree trunks, or stones. I load them on ...
