Artist Statement

Originating from a rural setting and a working class environment, rooted within a textile and farming community, contrast has provoked a sensitive reaction to the interpersonal relations of strangers within urban society, which I am now a part of. My work mirrors situation, it evaluates a balancing act within our physical and mental boundaries.

Rejecting my security of textiles and of tactile mixed medium, I focus on flat applications of oil and acrylic paint reflecting an ethereal, figurative impression. Combined with imposing large scale canvas I minimize the human need to physically connect, enhance alienation whilst simultaneously connecting through expressive large gestural marks and the seductive masses of tone manipulated by hands, brushes, water and oil.

The end result develops using a fragmented emotional response as an individual, disconnecting and connecting with emotion at intervals until I feel that my painting is finished. I have a desire to stimulate the senses and encourage sensation in my quest to provoke awareness of perception, probing harmony, and encourage uncertainty within the viewer.
