Jenn Cacciola uses intuitive material choices to leave relics and a sense of touch planted throughout densely layered scenes. These relics act as transmitters across lineage, tracking what has bloomed and/or been shed generationally. The work takes form in fiber, sculpture, painting, drawing, and installation—sometimes involving audio components.
Cacciola uses high and low-quality art historical, archaeological, and personal references to understand the desire to connect ourselves to the ultimately unreachable past, and to something more stable and “simpler” than what is contemporary. Peripheral influences like ancient graffiti, extraterrestrial theories, and common mourning practices all begin to represent the allure of half-knowing something while feeling intimately close to it. She is interested in the impulses, nervousness, desires and guiding forces that cause us to seek out relationships to history, and the way these forces inform our present-day relationships. Many of Jenn’s works address viewers individually—sometimes imposing themselves or calling to viewers in a way that establishes a more private relationship between the piece and its visitor.
