Yorkshire born, John spends his time between London, Italy and Yorkshire.
John gained a Masters degree in Social Anthropology from Edinburgh University before apprenticing as a cathedral stonemason at Gloucester Cathedral and then York Minster. He also worked on the restoration of London’s St. Pancras Chambers during it’s conversion to the Eurostar terminal. After 15 years of restoration work John embarked on a City & Guilds Postgraduate Diploma in Historic Stone Carving at City & Guilds of London Art School to advance his drawing, modelling and carving skills. Following this John extended his practice to Italy in order to learn the art of marble carving.
John is inspired by all forms and periods of sculpture from so-called Primitive Art through Egyptian, Classical, Gothic, Neo-classical, French Romantic and early 20th Century Movements.
John states that he believes in making only original, genuine, well crafted and hand carved work. He works with all varieties of limestone and marble.
