Jo Mitchell Long

I work in Acrylics and Oils using long free brush strokes, energetic movement and elegant curves to create abstract gestural paintings. I paint with speed and expressive strokes and enjoy working on a larger scale where I have the space to develop my ideas as part of my creative process. My background in graphic design and my love of strong mark making has developed my artistic style, by breaking out of regimented grids and direct visual messages, and using colour, tone, texture and shape. My work is continually evolving and developing taking up more space, both literally and figuratively. As a woman we can be conditioned to tone down our emotions, to stay small and not take up too much space. My abstract work is an intuitive response to this female oppression.
