Joseph Mastroianni

My work is a fast paced unremitting exploration of process. The composition is altered until forms begin to emerge, using simultaneously executed paintings and drawings as reference. I allow each piece to feed off of one another. Repetition, pattern, line, form and color are the recurring subject matter within my work. The process of utilizing these basic elements is what drives me to make. Referencing only previous paintings or drawings, and working with immediate materials force me to conflict with the surface I am working on. The immediacy of the dry mediums and paint is an important aspect of my work. I do not use materials that can be erased, but negotiated with. Instead of covering up a "mistake" I attempt to resolve the composition and make it come to life.
