Kristen Brunelli is a writer and artist, based in Denver and NYC.
Of her most recent collection she writes:
"In September of 2012, I moved from NYC to Denver to live with people experiencing homelessness at the Catholic Worker. I began painting as I needed a tactile way of expressing what I saw. Many of these portraits are of guests at the Catholic Worker. “Christopher" is a portrait of a young boy who lived in the room next to mine for one year with his mother. The naive quality of my work--though unintentionally--reflects that I was simply thinking so much of this person - that they were on my mind.
This collection -- and most of my work -- helps me to reconcile -- or, at best, begin to accept-- suffering. The appearance or presence of flowers or leaves in my paintings suggests our shared vulnerability--that we are gentle, that we inhale and exhale. Perhaps, the flowers or leaves suggest that no one is in fact alone--as buds bloom and petals brown and curl, as leaves dry and fall into one another."
