I was born in a small city in rural Korea and I grew up surrounded by nature. My play-things were not toys made in factories but gifts of nature, weaving together persimmon leaves and bamboo twigs, and stringing flowers into chains. Down by the little creek we would gather muddy clay and use it to shape our own sculptures, without the aid of a teacher. An awareness and appreciation for nature still shapes my art.
I want my work to make people think. I want my work to have a spiritual message and human message in addition to the ascetic beauty.
