My art explores light, color and the essence of places, people and narratives that challenge and give the pleasure of discovery—a complex world that includes magical thinking. Mythology, poetry and art inform, inspire and enhance my creations.
I aim to capture a sliver of time, an emotion or idea, then fatten it with space, figures and images that expand and dramatize that experience bringing it to life. By using formal and informal tools, I push the movement within the painting, defining and giving expression to the essence of that space and subject matter.
My desire to embrace the chaos—by composing, decomposing and recreating—best describes my process/non-process and leads me to discover utterly different results. Layering of paint, allowing line, light and color to filter and rework sketches gives birth to new ideas and experiences that intrigue, inspire, and awaken.
I long for you the viewer to discover a truth that lies within, a story that is your own, perhaps a moment you’ve experienced or even longed for.
Building an understanding of the visual language has been my passion from an early age. As a teen, I traveled to Germany and Holland visiting museums and cathedrals, studiously filling sketchbooks and imaging life as an artist. After completing a BFA at the University of Utah, with talent, passion and a little luck, I was awarded a painting grant by the Greenshields Foundation that allowed me to expand my artistic journey to NYC. I pursued my love of painting and design at Boston University studying with James Weeks and Phillip Guston, whose insights and approach to color, space and figurative painting still inform me today. At the end of my MFA studies, I exhibited at the Boston University Art Gallery with my fellow graduates. I continued to exhibiting in group shows and was invited to show in the Fitchburg Art Museum’s Contemporary Artists in the Figurative Mode exhibit. During this time I secured a position at the Art Institute of Boston teaching painting, drawing and design also exhibiting along with faculty at their annual show. In 1985 I had my first solo show at the Chapel Gallery in Newton, Massachusetts.
Using my talent for visual storytelling I turned to advertising, working successfully as a Creative Director, winning...
