Some things I did –
Invented new artform – 'Slate inlaid marble'. To see the process click the red 'g' button above.
Drew and made things while being read to; liked the black and white drawings in the books.
Enjoyed the quality reproductions in the many art books around the house.
Got married. Small grant, so worked as postman, cleaner, nightwatchmen.
For myself, made and destroyed a lot of work, fulfilled some private commissions, and mounted some unimportant exhibitions here and there. Proposed a scheme to put giant relief sculptures on the cooling towers at Didcot Power Station. Only the German magazine 'Der Spiegel' took it seriously 'Kunst am Khülturm'.
Became 0.5 College Lecturer and immediately left to go and build a studio at Cresselly in Wales. There, signed on the dole and produced artwork: painting, drawing, body-printing, body-casting; constructed 30-something life-cast standing figures in ciment fondu and set them in a small field; made some movies; took some snaps.
Got excited when a primary teacher asked us to bring a bar of soap to carve. My mum and dad wouldn't give me one – 'A waste of soap.' It was 1950.
Sculpted a mermaid at big school.
Refused to go to university to 'read PPE' – whatever that means.
Stayed on at school and extra year fighting with my father about what I was 'going to do'.
Went to Farnham Art School and had a crack at everything from bookbinding to weaving.
Did Painting – should have done sculpture.
Applied to film school. 'Not enough places – come again next year'. Had to feed family so did Teacher Training.
With two student friends, mounted a show in a borrowed shop in Farnham.
Exhibited and Oriel Q, Narberth, a few times.
Made a website martinwhiteart.co.uk
Put work for sale at 'Saatchi online' with all the other millions of hopefuls.
