Merrilees Brown was born in London in 1975. She received her BA in fine art painting and drawing from The Glasgow School of Art. Later completing a Masters from the London University of the Arts. Her work has been published by Chronicle books and she is currently working with Tundra, Penguin/Random house. She has exhibited internationally.
Through evocative line, Merrilees’s drawings convey both mood, movement and a desire to capture sentient life.
Delicate and sometimes playful line, contrasts with solid and anchored color. The interplay between movement and mass is evocative of the fleeting and the ephemeral.
Merrilees has described the process of drawing as both cathartic and meditative. It’s about letting the journey of the line unfold. Whether it’s a means to an end like the drawing that underpins a painting or a sketch for a composition, the process itself of drawing, is a record of both depiction and creation and is a constant reminder of the simple pleasures of human touch.
"Drawing is not what one sees but what one can make others see"
Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917)
"Drawing takes time. A line has time in it"
David Hockney
