Michael Lawson

I am an abstract painter who likes to experiment and explore the space between intent and chance.

I use a variety of mixed media to explore that space but primarily work in oil. Constantly experimenting, I use a variety of supports to paint on; loose and stretched canvas, panel, wood, transparency film, paper, and even plexiglass. I paint both objectively and non-objectively. When painting abstractions of land and seascapes, I am inspired by the scenery of the places I have called home. I also seek exploration and adventure by painting pure non-objective abstract-expressions free of preconceived ideas.

I put a lot of emotion into my paintings. Some are brash and bold while others are calm, tranquil, and sometimes minimalistic.
Good art in my view elicits emotion; sometimes anger; sometimes sadness; sometimes peace; sometimes joy; but is always beautiful. That is what I try to convey to the viewer. I want the viewer to not only see the painting but to “feel” it as well.
